Mumbai: On Monday, torrential rains in the city and surrounding areas over 84 hours 500 mm of torrential rains motivated IMD to issue the first red warning of the season for August 18-19.Civil bodies of BMC and Navi Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Meera Bhayand announced a holiday for all schools and colleges on both days. The University of Mumbai postponed 32 examinations on 23 August.Two persons died-A compound wall collapse killed a 75-year-old watchman on Napian Sea Road, and another person was electrocked in Kanjurmarg. A 24 -year -old man went missing after entering the river Mithi, while a person was injured in a tree falling in Sahar.The huge decline turned down several roads, especially in Chamber and Dadar which was 100 mm in eight hours till 2 pm. Despite the Rs 156 crore spent on underground tanks, weak spots like Hindmata and Kings Circle were flooded. The dark subway remained closed for more than six hours.The flights were interrupted with one turn and 10 go-roounds. Central railway services were delayed by 10-60 minutes due to waterlogging in Kurla, Govandi, Tilak Nagar and Chamber, while Western Railway slowed the trains citing visibility. The metro went on normally. The best buses were diverted on 51 routes, while refuel and surge fare hit the cab and auto.Power outage was reported at Antop Hill, Mahalaxmi, Andheri Lokhandwala, Goregaon Gokuldham and Pavai. Police rescued students stuck in buses in Matunga and Kalwa, where locals used boats. Traffic Snarl killed Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Vadla Freeway and Juhu Gali.BMC announced a closure of the afternoon school, leaving parents and institutions. In Bombay HC, lawyers cited difficulty in reaching court, in which CJ assures generosity for non-mistake.Navi Mumbai reported a record rainfall from Sunday night, in which Nerul crossed 150 mm in 24 hours and 2,000 mm of seasonal rainfall. Traffic on Thane-Ballpur and Sion-Panvel highways slowed down as pits revived. Thane recorded 100 mm in 7 hours, with the worst hit of Kalwa.
