Last year, about 2,200 dog attacks were recorded on the Royal Mail Staff in the UK, the organization has said.
Sheffield and Portsmouth Post Codes had the most phenomena, with 66 and 60 attacks, respectively.
The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has expressed concern that dogs purchased during the Kovid epidemic were more likely to display problems.
A spokesman for the Royal Mail stated that “dog attacks are one of the most important security risks faced by post workers”.
Ellenor King-Voisine, from Hampshire’s Faranborough, was mailing a property with two dogs-one of which she was worried was an aggressive nature.
“The dog jumped on me and bit me three times above the right knee. When I looked down, I could see the flesh hanging on my foot,” he said.
She shouted, due to which the owner and her daughter came out. “I also shocked the dog because it went back to the house. I had to do my first aid because the man and his daughter were crying,” she said
Ms. King-Voisine was taken to A&E, where her wound was treated and she was given a tetanus jab. As a result of the attack, he was closed for three weeks.
“If I listen or see a dog now – any dog - I will really stop and I will wait until the owner goes to me because there is no way that I am taking a chance.
“I think as if I have to be ready to fight an attack instead of happening and I don’t know,” he said.
Royal Mail said that in 2024-25 financial year, there were 2,197 dog attacks on its employees.
It is slightly below 2,206 a year ago but the organization included 53 weeks in the 2023-24 financial year. Adjustment for that additional week is 2% above 2024–25 years.
The Royal Mail recorded a decline in significant injuries from dog attacks. Last year 74 were recorded, which was below 82 in 2023-24.
The Sheffield Postcode had the highest number of incidents, with 66 reported, followed by 60 in the Portsmouth region.
Dr. of RVC Rowena Packer said that she used to increase the ownership of the dog during the epidemic meant more dogs who were “less likely to come in contact with strangers coming home”.
“There are more dogs who are uncomfortable with strangers, potentially strangers in an unusual outfit.”
An RVC study published last year Dogs purchased in the epidemic had a high rate of problem behavior.
“We have achieved this current population of dog owners who do not have the previous experience, who can get incredible and potentially dangerous advice to train their dog online,” Dr. Packer said.
He said that “old dogs can be taught a suitable response”.
“I think people think people actually miss their dog training, to settle dogs, to relax, go somewhere to go somewhere.”
Health and Safety Director Liz Lloyd in the Royal Mail said: “Dog attacks are one of the most important security risks faced by post workers.”
“In many cases, these incidents result in severe injuries, emotional crisis and time away from work.
“The Royal Mail or the public continues to call the public to be cautious and responsible by securing your pet before opening the door to get mail mail or package.”
