According to local reports, an American tourist was seriously injured after being attacked by a shark during a spearfishing trip in Bahamas over the weekend.
The Royal Bahamas police force said in a Facebook post that the incident was located on the island of Abco, near Big Grand, on Sunday, August 17, after 1 pm on Sunday, August 17.
The 63 -year -old victim was initially treated at a nearby clinic before he could move to the United States for further medical care. Officials have not released additional details.
While shark attacks in Bahamas are rare, one of the highest rates in the world relative to its population in the country.

This latest event follows several recent attacks on American tourists.

Earlier this year, two Americans were hurt in a suspected shark attack, while a famous resort area floating in Bimini Bay, about 50 miles from Miami.
In December 2023, the 44 -year -old newly married Lauren Erich Van Wart of Massachusetts was badly cut off near the western end of the New Providence Island in Bahamas.

A month later, a 10 -year -old boy from Maryland was cut into the leg during a shark tank experience at the Paradise Island Resort. The boy was rushed to the hospital and survived the attack.
The US State Department has also warned passengers of shark related risks in the region.

In March, it released a level 2 travel advisor for Bahamas, urged Americans to “increase caution in exercise”, especially due to risks related to sharks.
The advisor warned, “Be cautious to sharks. Shark attacks have given rise to serious injuries and deaths.”
