Technology reporter
Eddie Hart studied computer science and cyber security at the University of Newcastle, graduated in 2024.
He says he knew that joining the technical workforce would be a challenge, but “I felt it would be a little easier”.
Even when the “junior” roles were advertised, they often demanded two or more years of professional experience, saying Mr. Hart.
“It is not realistic, and it is also discouraging by trying even good candidates.”
It is clear for him that potential employers are using AI tools to automate the simple parts of the coder’s work, the tasks that will be traditionally allowed to create new ones.
While companies undoubtedly benefit from using AI in parts of their operations, Mr. Hart says, “I don’t think it is durable to replace developers completely with AI.”
Chatgpt, and other coding tools are being convicted for collapse in tech job opening, especially for young software developers and engineers.
A report by UK National Foundation for Education Research 50% decline was observed In the advertisements of tech jobs between 2019/20 and 2024/25, the entry level is particularly affected with roles.
The report cited “anticipated impact of Artificial Intelligence” as one of the factors behind it.
At the same time, software developers have widely adopted the AI code tool, as well as expressing disbelief in their output.
Research by stack overflowA software knowledge platform, about half of the use shows AI tools daily, only one third despite relying on the output of such tools.
Prashant Chandrashekar, CEO of Stack overflow, says it is “a difficult time to graduate”.
More broadly, they say, its research suggests that developers are choosing to live, despite expressing dissatisfaction with their work. “People are probably running a bit for safety.”
All this means that young technologists are finding it difficult to get that important first job.
The stress of finding jobs is also being raised by the use of AI in the job application process.
Mr. Heart came into a highly automated application process with eight phases, the first of which was to answer the questions of 20 examination-style about itself.
Such exercises may take time for time.
Friends were asked to record and upload answers to interview style questions.
“And then it is just reviewed by AI and makes a computer decision. It just feels that you do not get the honor of being rejected by at least one human,” they say.
Colin, who did not want his full name to be used, studied computer science in the university, graduated in 2024.
He spent about a year working through the recruitment process for a large company – only to finally fail.
Even small firms often use AI for screen applications, saying, which means that CVS will have to structures to be “AI Friendly”.
Colin then found that he is being interviewed by those who have not clearly read my CV “.
Both Mr. Heart and Colin said they knew that senior roles were still out. But, they were surprised, if the young developers who filled them were unable to secure jobs like them.
Paul Dix, CTO and California-based database firm, inflammatory, says in any economic recession or disruption, junior software developers were those who became the most difficult hit.
But he says, “If no young developers are working, then you are going to reach this point where you do not even have senior developers, because you have completely killed your pipeline.”
It is more positively stated that Rajiv Ramaswamy, CEO of US Enterprise Cloud firm Nutanix,, “Some of these young people who come out of college have more experience using AI Tooling than traditional methods of programming.”
Ramaswamy says: “I like the market best for talent that we have seen in many years.”
Mr. Chandrashekhar says that there was always a “apprenticeship” type model in the industry, with a pipeline of young people and working with senior developers.
And, he suggests, officials and companies invested heavily in AI Tech, under pressure to show some returns on that investment. Even if he was only from cutting back when he was hired.
Stock overflow research also found that 64% of developers considered AI a threat to their jobs, it was four percent points in the previous year.
“They have now seen some limits, where you need humans in the loop,” Mr. Chandrasekhar Note.
Mr. Chandrashekar says that previous technical disruption had feared that both senior or junior jobs would disappear. But in fact they result in more jobs because people highlight new problems and challenges.
“There is going to be an unquenchable hunger for technologists and developers to build and build those things to help solve those problems.”
But this spike in demand cannot come on time for some graduates today.
Mr. Heart has played a role as a security engineer in the UK -based Cybercity firm Threvic Spike, which he received through a very human -centric job process.
Meanwhile, Colin has fully put his back on technology and is considering a career in police.
