A burnt car has been released on the recently renewed athletics track in Leeds.
Members of the Crossgings Harriers Running Club discovered mini and tire marks at the 400m circuit at the temple newsmum estate on Saturday morning.
Club’s Liz Meriman said: “They have donated, they dug the surface of the track, it’s not safe to run – we are very disappointed, we are very disappointed.”
Ms. Meriman said that a clearing operation had already successfully successfully transferred the car to the track, so that the 10K races planned for Sunday could be ensured, to reopen the convenience, still can move forward.
The circuit on the temple Newsm Estate was once the city’s main athletics facility, and the first was the first to be available for public use when the first opened in the city.
It was home to the Leeds City Athletic Club until 1980, but had fallen into disarray with pits that appeared in the track in recent years.
Work since Restore the site Clubs launched in 2024 have organized several voluntary days to clean weeds and built earthen tracks and edges.
The work of cinder response has also been completed recently.
Speaking before the clout-up operation began, Ms. Meriman said: “We were very upset, very sad, because all the time and work of all the blood due to sweat and tears.”
“The purpose of restoration was to make convenience good for our community, so it is free and safe to use,” he said.
“But now it is covered in bits of metal, glass, oil and brake fluid, so it is not safe.”
Ms. Meriman said that the “army of volunteers” from the club was making “the work safe for yesterday’s race and again for purpose.
“The race begins and ends on the track and is definitely moving forward,” she said.
The car has been informed to the West Yorkshire Police and the force has been approached for comment.
