Ford is investing $ 5 billion to change the way of making electric vehicles, a trick automaker says it will allow it to manufacture models starting $ 30,000 – less than the current average price for an EV.
The company in Dearborne, Michigan said on Monday that it would invest $ 2 billion to modernize its Louisville assembly plant and another $ 3 billion to build a new battery plant in Michigan, which is part of its push to produce more cheap EVS.
The company unveiled its new “Universal EV platform” at a Monday’s event, in which Ford CEO Jim Farley described it as “the most radical change as we design and how we manufacture vehicles in Ford since model T, which Ford introduced in 1908.
According to Ford, the new assembly line will be more structured like a “assembly tree”, which will be converted into one instead of a single assembly belt with three separate lines.

Dog Field, head of Ford’s EV head digital and design at Monday’s program, said, “This is the way of manufacturing a vehicle, we are confident, anyone in the world has done so anywhere in the world.”
The company stated that the design would lead to a sharp, smooth assembly process and improve ergonomics for employees through low obstructive layouts.
Ford’s first EV from the new system
The first product of this new production system will be a four-door midsize truck, which will begin in 2027. Farley said on Monday that five people in the new vehicle would be accommodated and a “Frank”-a front storage compartment will also be a pickup truck bed.
The vehicle will start from $ 30,000. Comparatively, according to Kelly Blue Book, the average price of a new electric vehicle in July was around $ 56,000.
The field mentioned the truck as a “mobile power plant” to the charging capabilities of the new vehicle.
He said, “Outlets in the back can give you high strength and plug you into anything from the tool to a refrigerator, and it can provide backup power for your home,” he said.
Ford stated that midsize electric trucks could be produced up to 40% faster than other vehicles at the Louisville assembly plant.
In another attempt of low cost, the auto company is also reducing the number of components going into each car. Vehicles produced on the “Universal EV platform” would have 20% less part than the traditional vehicle, said Ford said.
According to a video shared by the company Ford, the small cobalt and nickel-free batteries will also use that it will allow it to create a “cost profit”.
