After losing his job as a batting coach in 2022, England and Surrey Cricketer Graham Thorpe “spirals in depression”, an inquiry has been heard by an inquiry.
The 55 -year -old died after hitting a train on the morning of 4 August 2024, his widow Amanda Thorpe later said that he had taken his life.
An inquiry in the Wocking Coroner Court on Wednesday heard that Shri Thorpes revealed anxiety and depression in 2018 and tried to kill his life in 2022.
The left-handed batsman spent his entire first-class game career in Surrey, with 100 Tests and 82 ODIs for England between 1993 and 2005.
Mrs Thorpe said that there were no psychological issues especially until 2020, besides “a contest of depression” in 2018 which did not affect her job.
His statement went to address an incident in 2022 to include a leaked video in Australia, which left Mr. Thorpe “distraught”.
According to the reports of the time, the video showed the Tasmanian police to break a drinking session, including both England and Australia players.
Describing this as a “terrible” time, Mrs. Thorpe said that the end of her employment with England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was a “real blow”, which marked the “fall” of her mental health.
Mr. Thorpe’s father, Geoff Thorpe, said in a statement that the video incident “caused him of horrific loss”.
ECB Chief Medical Officer, Professor Nick Pierce said in a statement that his personal health insurance cover was extended till May after the end of Sri Thorap’s employment in February 2022.
He said that during the time of Mr. Thorpe with ECB, there was no concern about “no points” risk of self -loss or “intention to eliminate life”.
Reading Geoff Thorpe’s statement, the coroner said: “You felt that those who were responsible for Graham’s safety and care could have done more to intervene.”
Coroner Jonathan Stevens GP of Shri Thorpe, Dr. Read a statement from Jone Munli, who said that the cricketer came to know about anxiety and depression in 2018.
Dr. Munli said that in 2022, an attempt to kill her life resulted in a brain injury, leaving Thorpe in deep care.
Mrs. Thorpe said that, until 2023, her husbands were experiencing suicide views and were “a terrible way” after Christmas that year.
The final contact between those responsible for Mr. Thorpe and his psychiatry care was in June last year.
The inquiry is going on.
