A drone video grabbed a great white shark in the water of a holiday location in the northeast.
Police, Main, which is located right south of Portland in Scarborough, confirmed this week that the shark was seen away from the state beach.
“On Monday, August 11, 2025, the sea resource officer of Scarborough received a report as a large shark appearing near Richmond Island and Scarborough Beach,” the city wrote on its Facebook page.
“Followed comments were held, and on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the Marine Resources Officer received a drone video footage, shown a potential great white shark, estimated that it is estimated that a length of 10–12 feet was estimated from the southern end of Richmond Island in the area around Higins Beach and Scarboro Beach.”

The main department of Marine Resources says on its website that “while the relative risk of shark encounter is very low, the risk should always be reduced whenever possible in any activity on water.”
This recommends that swimmers live close to the edge, avoid areas where there are seals or school fish and limit the spatting.
