Five years ago Yavon Hughes were planning his funeral.
After thinking that after years she will not only survive, but the comedy performing in Edinburgh fringe would be a bad joke by standing on the platform.
Glasswagian was diagnosed cystic fibrosis When just a child, which means that he faced breathing and digestive problems throughout his life.
He told Morning program of BBC Radio Scotland By 2020, “This was a miracle to go in my 40s in the mid -40s” given the mortality of the disorder.
However a new drug – Kaftrio – has completely changed his life since then, and has given his hope for the future.
Arriving at that point has been a long and often disturbing road, though.
“When I was young, people were dying around me, like my friends, I was going to Yorkhill Children Hospital”, she told Morning Host Koni McLaglin.
“I was leaving, but as I got old, the disease began to affect more. I liked the things like dance, swimming and brownie, but every now and then I fell ill and have to go to the hospital.”
To make life even more difficult for yavon was medical research that found that cystic fibrosis patients should be kept away from each other.
“We grow bacteria in our lungs that can be dangerous for other people with CF,” she said.
“This is the same as something like Kovid will spread, just spread bacteria among us.
“Science caught him and told us that you cannot mix anymore, so we are the only disease groups where we are encouraged not to mix with others.”
Crime of Survivor
Yavon recalled standing in a church when she died in the funeral of a childhood friend of about 20 years, who died of cystic fibrosis.
He said that he realized that the situation was a terminal, and later in tears for a few days.
“I think I have found the guilt of the survivor in a way,” he said.
When Yavon was a child, the average life expectancy for patients with the condition was 31, which means that by the time she reached her 40s, she had already outlined those early expectations.
Despite the medical development that enhances average life expectancy, Yavon’s lung work declined by about 30% that he wanted.
She felt that she would not be able to qualify for any new drugs developed.
“We knew that these miracles were happening [with new treatments] But I felt that I am very ill to be benefited. I planned my funeral with my family.
“It was a miracle to go to my 40s in the mid -40s.”
But by 2020 the caffito was approved for use in Scotland – a modular drug Works to treat the root cause of the disease Bypassing genetic errors responsible for the disease.
Yavon insisted that Kaftrio is not a miraculous medicine and does not work for everyone, but for that, the effect was immediate.
energy levels
Within hours she was coughing the mucus, and as the days passed, she realized that her energy level was rising again.
“The drug needs to be taken with fatty foods, so my father had to go out and blow the budget for me to take it.
“I remember that I opened the delivery man’s door and said ‘You are about to save my life’ – and did it. It’s five years later and now I am in the fringe, it’s boners.”
Inspired by his new energy, Yavon did a course for comedy at the center of a university to learn lifetime.
This causes his own shows, and this year’s fringe effort – absolutely riddled – which works in his health conflicts as part of the material.
It may not seem to be a recipe for easy laughter, but Yavon believes that it is a “hot and life confirmation” show, which is a show, Lasts till August 15,
He said: “I was out of the hospital every six to eight weeks ago. Now I have got all this energy – sometimes I forget that something is wrong with me.”
