During the protest, the MPs raised slogans holding a large banner against the practice of the Election Commission, reading: “Sir: Loktant Paar war” (attack on democracy). The opposition has alleged that voter roll amendments are being misused to suppress votes and decompose some sections of the population.According to the Election Commission, 98.01% of the voters in Bihar have been covered under the head running till 23 July. Officials said the process has so far identified about 2 million deceased voters, 28 lakh persons who have migrated permanently, 7 lakh voters have enrolled in many places, 1 lakh unnatural voters, and about 1.5 million uncontrolled voters. The EC also mentioned that about 90.89% of the total 7.17 crore voter form – has been obtained and digitized. This is the first such amendment in Bihar in 22 years. The EC says that the aim of SIR is to clean the electoral rolls by removing unqualified, duplicate or non-existent entries, while all eligible citizens are involved.
