National Human Rights Commission Bhubaneswar on Wednesday sought a detailed report from Odisha DGP within two weeks on the death of a 19-year-old Women’s College student, as it was allegedly not accepted by the local police against the FIR against her ex-boyfriend.
An official statement issued by NHRC said that on August 6, the right to death of a female student took cognizance of the death panel of a female student, threatened to upload her pornographic photos on social media due to self-explosion in Kendrapara district of Odisha after alleged police inaction against her former male friend, an official statement issued by NHRC.
A day after NHRC action, Kendrapara SP Siddharth Kataria said that the woman committed suicide by putting inflammatory substances on her body when no one was present in the house on 6 August. “It was not earlier allegedly not a case of murder of honor,” the SP said on Tuesday.
The NHRC raised the case amid allegations of police inaction for about six months on a complaint against the former male friend. It was alleged that former-lovers were threatening to post their pornographic photos and videos on social media.
Kendrapara SP has said that on July 17, her lover sent some objectionable pictures of the victim to her father and 4/5 other persons. The police have seized the mobile phones of all the concerned persons and are verifying whether they too have made it viral. He said that the police have arrested the victim’s ex -boyfriend, who is the only accused in the case.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of human rights violations, therefore, it has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Odisha, called a detailed report on the matter within two weeks, including the investigation status.
It said that according to media reports, the woman was studying in a college in Kendrapara district. Her father alleged that she was being blackmailed regularly by a former male friend. A complaint in this regard was given to the police about six months ago by the victim’s father, but neither an FIR was lodged nor any action was taken against the alleged criminal.
The statement said, “Rather, a police officer allegedly discouraged him from chasing the case and suggested blocking the blackmailer’s phone number.”
Meanwhile, the SP said that they have shifted ASI Selndra Mohan Pala from Pattamundai police station to ensure transparent investigation. The victim’s father nominated Palei as a police officer, who did not register the case six months ago.
The father had said that Palei had registered a case and action was taken against the accused ex -boyfriend, his daughter must have survived today.
Palei, however, denied the allegations and claimed that no one had contacted the FIR, nor did he suggest anyone to block the mobile number of the accused person.
