A progressive house “squad” member is attacking his own state party leadership to return to the support of a self-known Democratic Socialist to be the mayor of Miniapolis.

Omar wrote on X, “It is unable to reverse DFL support from Omar Fateh.”

Progressive House Democrat also led a letter to other DFL officials, in which he “strongly condemned” the move.
Omar and other leftist officials wrote, “Right now, there is a clear tension between progressive democrats that are challenging the status quo and liberal democrats.”
“It is very disappointing that Omar Fateh, the first black mayorl candidate to be DFL-endors in the last three decades, canceled his support.”
Omar has not yet given public support in the race, which is scheduled for November 2025.

Fateh, who described himself as a “Democratic Socialist” in the October 2020 interview Jacobin magazineAfter the July 2025 support conference, he defeated several other Democrat expectations to get the support of his state party.
The primary candidates he had defeated at that time was the Mayor Jacob Frey of the current Miniapolis, who are running for the third term.
Fateh has been compared to Democratic Socialist New York City Mayorl candidate Zoharan Mamdani.
But DFL party president Richard Carlbom did not mention Fateh’s politics in a Thursday statement, which announced his support.

But Omar and the state progressives have seized the move as an example of the divisions running within the Democratic Party.
“The chair Richard Carlbom campaigned to unite DFL; This decision directly runs the counter for the effort for which we are all committed. The DFL party is a large-timb party and all groups should be properly represented, not silent,” Umar wrote.
“Undoubtedly, this horrific decision will leave many voters from attending our party to discourage and feel unwanted.”
Fox News reached Minnesota DFL for digital comment, but did not listen back to the press time.
