He has performed well in Brentford, but is very different to play for Manchester United. In relation to Brentford, there is no great hope. In United, they will be expected to perform directly.
He has experience, he is a good finisher, and his versatility is a great positive – he can play on a central striker as well as wing, cutting inside the right side of his left leg.
But he had a very good season where his number was very good, so the question is whether he can repeat it.
Consistency in those further positions is what they are trying for United, because they do not have it, say, Alejandro Garnacho or Antony.
They are probably thinking about an old, more experienced player who is more reliable, what they need. This is Mbeumo – he fits the system of Ruben Amorim, and he also fits the bill as a proven Premier League quality.
United’s attack is clearly an area that needs to be improved. People talk about that the way they play on the back, want three amorims behind, and many times it is a difficult system to play when you are trying to press high because all your players have to work hard and actually switch.
So he has gone to Mbeumo, because I think he is someone he feels that he needs him in all areas, occupied and out, with work rates and energy – and also the goal.
