The Italian Orientor Matia Debertolis died after falling during the World Games in China last week.
The 29 -year -old was found unconscious by the organizers during an orienting event in Chengdu last Friday.
Italian died on Tuesday – four days after his collapse.
The World Games organizers said in a statement, “Despite receiving immediate expert medical care in one of the major medical institutions in China, he passed away.”
Tom Holowell, president of the International Orienting Federation (IOF), said he was “not able to enough to describe the deep depth of sadness in this tragic loss of life”.
The cause of Debertolis’ death is unknown at this level.
The World Games is a multi-sport event held for events to be held every four years that are not listed in the Olympics.
Debertolis was participating in the finals of the men’s mid-2, which occurred at a temperature above 30 degrees, when it fell.
Orienting is an external sport in which participants have to navigate between the outstanding posts using a map.
It combines physical activity with map-reading and problems.
Italian was one of the 12 athletes listed as “not finished” in official results.
He was part of the Italian national team and finished fifth in the 2022 World Cup final.
Debertolis, who was qualified as a civil engineer, lived in Sweden and studying for PhD at a university in Stockholm.
