Sam Altman is supporting brain-computer interface startup merge labs, to compete with Alone Musk’s neurlinks, to pursue the human-AI connection.
Openai CEO, Sam Altman, allegedly planning to return a new company called Merge Labs that works on brain-computers technology. This technique allows the brain to connect directly to the computer. This new startup is expected to compete directly with Elon Musk’s neurlinks established in 2016.
Neurlink has been working on brain transplant since 2016 to help people with paralysis control devices with its ideas. Merge Labs allegedly want to go even further and the idea is that there is a relationship between humans and AI smooth and perhaps also increase human abilities beyond medical requirements.
Merge Labs is still in a very early stage and is demanding $ 250 million for evaluation of about $ 850 million and funding. Money Openai’s investment can come by hand. Sam Altman is also working with Alex Blania, who is working on another project focused on advanced biometrics for identity verification.
There is a major difference between neurlink and merge labs: Merge Labs is searching for less aggressive brain implants, which will not require large surgery and will use artificial intelligence to improve it. Neurlink has already tested its transplantation in humans and has reached a nine billion dollar evaluation.
The brain-computer interface area is progressing rapidly. Recently, at the 2025 World Robot Championships in Beijing, teams demonstrated brain-controlled robots and drones that respond to brain signals in real time. In another success, scientists from UC Davis created a brain-computer system, which converts brain signals into speech for a man with ALS that gives him the ability to talk.
Such technology can change rehabilitation, accessories and even make home automation easier through natural human-computer interactions. These innovations suggest that brain-computer technology is eventually leaving laboratories and moving towards real-world use and has the ability to help millions.
