Parliament passed the bill to set up IIM in Guwahati, the latest news provides capital assistance of ₹ 550 crore

The project is part of a special development package for Assam, which aims to promote education in the region.
Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed a bill for the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, in which the Central Government provided a capital assistance 550 crores.
The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
The opposition was staged after the 2025 Indian Institute (Amendment) Bill at the Indian Assembly.
Responding to the discussion on the bill, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that it will be the 9th IIM to be established under the Narendra Modi-led government in the last 10 years.
“The 22nd IIM in the country will be set up on an investment in Guwahati 555 crores, “the minister said.
He thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for efforts to seek approval for the establishment of an IIM in the state.
“I am emerging as the Northeast today (the way). Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is concrete behind the Northeast … IIM Guwahati will definitely create a big scenario for the entire Northeast, especially Assam and Guwahati,” Pradhan said.
Indian Institute of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 – which was passed between Deen in the lower house on Tuesday – will help install the second IIM in the Northeast after Shillong.
The establishment of an IIM in Guwahati as an institution of national importance is one of the projects under the special development package provided to Assam.
