Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday welcomed the promotion and regulation of the online gaming bill, 2025, which was passed by both houses of Parliament, saying that it would encourage e-sports and protect the society from the harmful effects of online sports.
The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed an online gaming bill amid protests by opposition leaders, when the law was passed in the Lok Sabha.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “This bill passed by both houses of Parliament throws light on our commitment to make India a center for gaming, innovation and creativity. It will encourage e-Sports and online social games. At the same time, it will protect our society from the harmful effects of online money games.”
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the promotion and regulation of online gaming bills, 2025, clearing its first legislative barrier amid criticism from the gaming industry.
While the gaming industry cited thousands of crores of rupees in investment and revenue related to online gaming sector, the government believes that the benefits of banning such sports are ahead of the costs.
On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Bill within seven minutes of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnav, which introduced.
The Rajya Sabha also approved the law after rejecting the amendments proposed by opposition members.
Promotion and regulation of online gaming bill, 2025
The objective of the online gaming bill is to ban all forms of online money game, promoting e-Sports and online social gaming. It also prevents online money games and advertisements of Bars banks and financial institutions from facilitating or transferring money for such activities.
“People lose their life savings in online money gaming,” Ashwini Vaishnav told MPs in Parliament.
He said, “Our aim of this bill and this practice has been going on for more than three years, where we have deeply associated with the industry how to prevent harmful effects can, vest and reduce,” he said.
In a brief interpreter on the online gaming bill in the X post, Vaishnav said that the law gives legal recognition to e-sports. He said that the government will start plans and programs to promote them.
The bill aims to promote online social games, which is recognized as a safe way to interact and learn. “To support government sports manufacturers and creators – part of India’s manufacturer economy and software development,” said Vaishnav.
The objective of the online gaming law is to have a balanced approach, punishing service providers, advertisers and fund transfer platforms.
