A British steel worker who took gymnastics only six months ago took bronze at a national event.
Chris Huton of Scanthorpe recently won a medal in the Adult British Championship.
38 -year -old Mr. Huton said that he always wanted to become a gymnast and finally pushed himself to give it at the age of 40.
But when he was on the podium in the championship, he found himself asking his coach whether it was all real.
Mr. Huton, who has worked at the Scanthorapa plant for 15 years, is not a stranger to take challenges, including cycling from his home town to Scafael Pike for charity.
But it was gymnastics that he always wanted to do.
“It has always been a family program that is watching British gymnastics on TV,” he said.
“I always wanted to go.”
His brother, Nick encouraged Mr. Huton to accompany him to go with the Elegro Gymnastics Academy.
They turned into a club on Thursday evening, not knowing what to expect, but Mr. Huteon was “like a child in sweetness”, and he said the evening proved to be “fuel to take it forward”.
It was only in May that his coach recommended that he entered adult British championships in the novice category of the 30s, in acrobatic dance, trumpoline, tombing and artistic gymnastics.
This meant that to come with the new routine and learn new skills for this program in Lilsol, Shropshire, and they thought it would be a good experience.
‘I will not forget a moment’
Six months after taking the game, participating in a national competition with more than 400 fellow contestants was a “real moment”, and when he was on the podium, he turned to his coach and asked if this was really happening.
He said, “You see the clap of everyone around the room and everyone.
Alisan Sedman, head coach of Elegro Gymnastics Academy, said: “Chris had grit and determination and always tries everything.
“We are very proud of Chris and can’t wait to move him forward.”
