Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra raised a dispute with the gang rape of a student of Kolkata Act, saying that if the woman had not gone to the spot, she would not have been.
The first year student of South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gangraped inside the campus by Monojit Mishra, an alumnus of the college. The police have arrested the main accused and three other people involved in the crime.
Monjun Mishra, a former member of the Trinamool Congress Youth Wing, is the main accused. The case has started a political clash in West Bengal, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party has accused the ruling party of being a “protector of rapist”.
To add to the growing row, TMC MLA Madan Mitra sent a message to all the girls, talking to news agency ANI. He said, “… if someone calls you when the college is closed, then gives you a situation in the unit, don’t go, nothing will be good.”
“If that girl had not gone there, it would not have happened. If she had informed someone before leaving or some friends had taken it, it would not have happened,” she said referring to the rape of a student of law.
Mitra further said that the accused took advantage of the situation. He said, “TMC TMC is a big party. Anyone or another is associated with Trinmool everywhere … We take our photos with everyone, but what is inside a person, only a psychologist can tell,” he said.
The BJP had shared the images of Monojo Mishra, the main accused, along with the TMC leadership, including MP Abhishek Banerjee. The party, like Mishra, severely criticized Mamata Banerjee -led party for her link with ‘rapist’.
Madan Mitra told Annie, “People get pictures of clicking with TMC leaders and then start calling themselves TMC leaders.”
In her complaint, the survivor said that she went to the campus for some work in the evening when the accused asked her to stay back. He called her outside the union room and proposed to marry her, alleging. But when the woman was preparing to leave, the accused corn her and asked the other two persons to stand out.
“It was within the other part of the other … he took me to the washroom and tried to force me with the intention of having sex,” the cedar read.
Kalyan Banerjee’s ‘What can be done?’ Comment
Madan Mitra is not the first TMC leader to shake a line with his comment on the tragedy. Earlier on Friday, Trinmool MP Kalyan Banerjee reacted to the Gangrep incident and asked, “What can be done if a friend raped his friend?”
Banerjee had urged women to be vigilant to people with such ‘dirty mentality’.
“I am not a lawyer in the incident at Law College, but the accused should be arrested. Some people commit this type of crime … but what can be done if a friend raped his friend. What can be done in the police schools? It was done by the students to another student. Who will protect his (victim)?” TMC MP told reporters.
He also said that such people should understand “who they are with”.
Distance from Mitra to TMC, Banerjee’s comment
The Trinmool Congress condemned the remarks made by party leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra, saying they were in their “personal abilities”.
“The party unevenly separates itself from its statements and strongly condemns him. These ideas do not reflect the party’s position in any way.” The party led by Mamta Banerjee wrote in a post on X.
This put pressure on its attitude of zero tolerance for crimes for crimes, stating that it demands the most strict possible punishment for all those involved in heinous crime.
BJP lambasts TMC
The Bharatiya Janata Party overshadowed the Trinamool Congress for its ‘derogatory’ comments of its leader.
BJP co-integrated, Amit Malviya of West Bengal, criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comment from “close aide Madan Mitra” and said, “This is the victim-dosha, plain and wile”.
He said that the ruling TMC once again “chose to defame the woman – did not support her – just to mold a close aide of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew”.
Malavia said, “Let it drown: No woman is safe from these TMC predators, and in TMC, Madan Mitra’s choice is said to be less.
BJP’s X Handle also shared Madan Mitra’s video and criticized TMC, “A new low questioning the character of the rape victim in the Park Street rape case!”
“He (Mitra) effectively proves what the government had once declared after the case – any woman should not go out alone at night in West Bengal or work!” The party wrote.
The BJP further stated that TMC’s DNA is “anti -women”, saying that the party does not do justice, “they want to vandalize women”.
“This is a pattern. From Mamta Banerjee to Kalyan Banerjee, Kakali Ghosh Dastra and Sashi Panj – TMC is the root cause of the rise of crimes against women in West Bengal,” said this.
In addition, the BJP State Unit also slammed TMC’s move to “decissoet” with the statements made by Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra.
“What is? TMC is a party of rape-supathyers, rape-enablers and serial criminals,” it has written a series of comments made by TMC leaders, including party chief Mamata Banerjee on the incidents of sexual assault since 2012.
It also listed the incidents of the attack, where TMC leaders were involved, and said “Bengal can never be safe for women until TMC is out of power”.
