Reporting from White House
Ukraine’s President Volodimir Zelanski returned to the White House on Monday to meet US President Donald Trump to meet US President Donald Trump for the purpose of ending the war in Ukraine.
Many European leaders also extended their plan to attend the meeting, after Trump, Trump met Russia President Putin in Alaska for a summit, which failed to produce a ceasefire.
Here are the major takeaairs with talks in Washington.
Zelansky launched attraction aggressively
Given his last visit to the Oval Office in February, the Ukrainian president went into length to become a collegium and attracted his American hosts – which included a hurry of six “thank you” within a few minutes of the meeting.
The last time he was at the White House, Zelancesi was rebuked by JD Vance for lack of gratitude for American support for Ukraine during the war.
Another point of controversy at the February meeting – Zelanceci’s dress – also made a comeback.
This time, Zelansky was wearing clothes in a dark suit instead of his traditional military dress, and was well prepared with a joke when he was asked by the same reporter about his organization, who first criticized him for not wearing a suit to the oval office.
The reporter told him that he looked “luxurious”, Zelansky shot back that he was last wearing a “same suit”, who was removing laughter from reporters, Trump and other officials in the room.
“As you see, I changed,” he said.
Zelansky demanded to play for Trump’s family during the meeting, handing a letter to Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelancesa to the US President to Melania Trump.
“This is not for you – for your wife,” he said.
A few days after the delivery of the letter, Trump handed over a letter to Vladimir Putin from Melania in Alaska, in which he called Putin to protect the “innocence of children” and “nurture the hope of the next generation”.
“She looks at heartbroken,” Trump told Putin about his wife’s letter.
“She would like to see it the end. And she says it is very openly, very proud, and with great grief, because so many people have been killed.”
Trump indicates security guarantee
One of the questions mounted by Zelansky was what he needed from America to guarantee his country’s security. Was this soldier, intelligence, tool?
In a moment that expressed the feeling of urgency, which he tried to suppress a lot during the press conference, Zelancesi leaned to her chair and said, strongly: “Everything.”
“We need a strong Ukrainian army,” he said. “It is about weapons, people, training missions and intelligence.”
This was pressurized by reporters, Trump gave several references to the safety guarantee for Kiev.
He said that Europe would be the “first line of defense” for Ukraine, but also promised to be “involved”.
“We will give them good security,” the President said at one point.
This is the most deciding Trump, which is ever on the issue of security guarantee, which is usually seen as paramount for any deal with Russia.
On Monday, the US President said that during the last week’s United Summit, Putin admitted that there would be a security guarantee for Ukraine as part of any peace deal.
But the lack of expansion about these guarantee may be related to both Kiev and Europe, and the leaders of the closed doors will not try to influence Trump behind the leaders of the US should be more than just symbolic.
The continuous flow of weapons in Ukraine will be welcomed; A promise of American shoes on the ground will be even more resulting.
It can be difficult to achieve such a level commitment, at this stage, from the US.
But the fact that Trump did not completely dismiss it, Ukraine and his colleagues hope that they can be persuaded.
A tripartite meeting on the card?
One of the much awaited objectives of Trump is to organize a three-way meeting with Zelansky and Putin.
Prior to his conversation with European leaders on Monday, he said that it would now be “when, no” such a meeting.
Although this can be an easy effort than defying the conditions of the peace deal, it will not be straight in any way.
For months, Zelancesi has been insisting on meeting Putin. It was probably a way to prove its argument that Russia is not serious about pursuing peace, as he knew that Putin was not interested in agreeing to such a meeting.
In fact, Kremlin has repeatedly rejected it and argued two weeks ago that Russian and Ukrainian presidents had no reason to find “after proper distance” between the posts of the two countries, “distance”.
Trump will be hoping that the distance is now getting away from his mediation efforts.
