The 19 -year -old accused, a resident of a village in Kohima district, allegedly attacked a woman near Bota village on 16 July while returning from the ground. He is currently in judicial custody.
Shops and commercial establishments in the state capital remained closed during protests as a mark of solidarity.
The protesters took the placard and banner demanding justice and serious punishment under the law for the accused. He also marched in the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima to submit a memorandum.

According to the memorandum, the accused returned to the victim while returning from his ground, assaulted him with a knife, and tried to rape and kill him.
Before intervening a passer -by, the woman faced several knife wounds behind the neck, hand and her ear. The accused then fled.
He was later caught by local youth and handed over to the police.
NAWO urged the officials to ensure a foolish investigation and warned against granting bail to the accused.
